Sheets formulas without the headache

Ask for the formula instead of googling it

FreeAbout 5 min

If you have ever wanted a spreadsheet to do something and given up because you did not know the formula, this is the guide that fixes that permanently.

You no longer need to know formulas. You need to be able to describe what you want.

How to ask

Describe the outcome in plain language and say where the data is. That is the whole skill.

  • “Add up column C but only the rows where column A says groceries.”
  • “Tell me how much I spent per month, based on the dates in column A and the amounts in column B.”
  • “Highlight anything in column D that is more than thirty days old.”
  • “Split the full names in column A into first and last name.”

You can do this in Sheets itself if you have a paid Google AI plan, or in any chatbot for free by describing your columns. The free route works fine and you paste the formula in.

Household things worth a spreadsheet

  • Activity costs by kid, by season. The number that is always bigger than you think.
  • A chore rotation that actually rotates instead of quietly becoming permanent.
  • Gift budget by person, so December stops being a surprise.
  • Recurring bills with renewal dates, which is the thing that catches the annual subscriptions before they charge.

When it goes wrong

The most common failure is that it does not know how your sheet is laid out. Tell it: “my headers are in row 1, dates in column A, amounts in column B.” Most wrong formulas come from it guessing that.

And if a formula errors, paste the error back and say what you expected. It will usually fix it on the second try.
