Google Docs, Help me write

The feature sitting in your sidebar right now

FreeAbout 5 min

There is an AI writing helper inside Google Docs. For household use it has a handful of genuinely good applications and a lot of ways to waste your time.

Where it is worth using

  • The first draft of something you keep putting off. The letter to the school, the note to the neighbor, the thing that has been on your list for three weeks. A bad first draft you can fix beats a blank page you avoid.
  • Turning notes into something readable. You have bullet points from a meeting or an appointment. It makes them into paragraphs someone else can follow.
  • Making something shorter. It is better at cutting than at writing, and cutting is usually what a document needs.
  • Changing the tone of something you wrote angry. Genuinely useful, and worth doing before you send it.

Where it is not

Anything that needed to sound like you. It has a house style and the house style is beige.

The rule that works: use it for the structure and rewrite the voice. Let it produce the shape of the thing, then go through and make it sound like a person wrote it, because at the moment one did not.

The thing worth setting up once

A document of household templates. The absence note, the standard reply to a party invitation, the message you send about carpool changes. Draft each once, fix the voice, and keep them.

Then you are copying rather than generating, which is faster and sounds like you every time.
