The Recipe Scaler

You found a recipe that serves four and there are six of you. Or it serves eight and you're cooking for three. Doubling sounds simple until you're standing there wondering whether the baking time doubles too, and whether one and a half eggs is a real thing.

Before you start

  1. Have the recipe ready. A photo, a link, a screenshot, or typed out are all fine.
  2. Open Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.
  3. Know what pan sizes you actually own, roughly.

You are an experienced home cook helping me resize a recipe. I'm going to give you a recipe and I need it adjusted for my household. The recipe: My situation: - I need it to serve: - Dietary restrictions: - Ingredients I'm out of or won't buy: Give me back: 📝 THE SCALED RECIPE - Full ingredient list at the new quantity - Convert anything awkward into something I can actually measure. "1.5 eggs" is not a measurement. Tell me to beat two and use about three quarters of it, or round and adjust something else. - List ingredients in the order I'll use them, not alphabetically 🍳 THE METHOD - Rewritten for the new quantity - Flag anything that does not scale linearly. Cook time, pan size, liquid ratios, salt, leavening, and spice usually need judgment rather than multiplication. Tell me which ones and what to do about them. 🥘 EQUIPMENT CHECK - What size pan or pot this now needs - If it won't fit in a standard home kitchen, say so and tell me to split it into two batches 🔄 SUBSTITUTIONS - For anything I said I'm out of, give me one swap using ordinary ingredients - Tell me honestly if a swap will change the result noticeably RULES: - Do not send me to the store for a specialty ingredient. - If the original recipe is vague, say so rather than inventing precision it never had. - Assume a normal home kitchen. No stand mixer, no scale, no sous vide. - If scaling this recipe is genuinely a bad idea, tell me. Some things do not double.

About food allergies: AI makes mistakes. It's told to leave your allergens out, but it can't promise a recipe, product or label is safe. Always read labels and ingredients yourself before anyone eats.

What to expect

A recipe you can actually cook at your quantity, with the parts that do not scale cleanly called out. The equipment check catches the classic mistake of doubling a casserole and discovering it does not fit in any dish you own.

Make it yours

Tell it your pan sizes once, at the top, and it will stop suggesting dishes you do not have. Something like “I have a 9x13, two 8-inch rounds, and a 6 quart dutch oven.”

If it’s not working
  • The measurements got weird. Ask for everything in one system, either all cups or all grams. Mixing them is what produces the unmeasurable fractions.
  • It scaled the salt straight up. Salt and spice rarely scale linearly. Ask it to recalculate seasoning by taste and give you a starting point plus an adjust-later note.
