The Backpack Decoder

Your kid's backpack just exploded on the counter. There are nine pieces of paper, three of them look important, one definitely needs money, and you're not sure which ones you already dealt with last week.

FreeNeeds photos of the papersAbout 3 min

Before you start

  1. Spread out all the papers.
  2. Take clear photos of each one, front and back if double-sided.
  3. Don't sort them first. That's the AI's job.
The prompt
I just pulled these papers from my kid's backpack. I have no idea what's important and what's junk. Review every document and give me: 📋 ACTION REQUIRED - anything I need to DO something about: For each item: - What it is (field trip form, picture day order, etc.) - What action I need to take (sign, pay, return, RSVP, send supplies) - Exact due date (or "no date listed, assume soon") - Dollar amount if money is involved - Sort this section by due date, soonest first 📅 DATES TO KNOW - anything that's informational with a date: - Events, early dismissals, holidays, spirit weeks - Include the day of the week. Not just "October 15," tell me "Wednesday, October 15" 📰 FYI ONLY - newsletters, menus, flyers for things that don't require action 🗑️ RECYCLING BIN - anything that's clearly junk, duplicate, or outdated. Tell me what it is so I can confirm before tossing. For each document, note the kid's name or grade if visible. If I have multiple kids, separate everything by child. Flag anything that seems time-sensitive or easy to miss - the small print deadline, the "return by Friday" buried in paragraph three.

Blanks you leave empty stay as brackets, so you can fill them in later.

What to expect

Every paper categorized with exact due dates and dollar amounts pulled out. The Recycling Bin category is surprisingly satisfying. Half the backpack is usually junk and now you know for sure.

Pro tip

Do this every Friday. Same prompt, fresh photos. Takes three minutes and you never miss a permission slip again.

If it’s not working
  • It missed a date. Photograph the back of every page. Deadlines hide there constantly.
  • It can't read the handwriting. Retake that one photo in better light, flat on the counter rather than held up.
