When to use Gemini vs Claude

The honest guide, and why you might use both

FreeAbout 6 min

These two are good at different things and the honest answer is that a lot of people should use both. Here is how to decide which one for what.

Use Gemini when the answer is already in your Google account

Gemini's real advantage is that it lives where your life already is. Your calendar, your inbox, your documents.

If the question is “what does my Thursday look like” or “find the email about the field trip,” Gemini can reach for it directly. Nothing else can do that without setup.

Use Claude when the thinking matters

Long, structured prompts with a lot of instructions in them. Anything where you want it to follow twelve rules and not quietly drop four of them.

Writing that has to sound like a person. Working through something difficult. The prompts on this site with the long RULES blocks, which is most of the good ones.

It also has Projects, which is the feature that stops you retyping your family into every conversation. That is the single biggest quality-of-life difference once you are using this regularly.

The honest cost comparison

Both standard tiers land around twenty dollars a month, so price is not the deciding factor between them.

The thing to notice is that a Google AI plan also comes with storage and covers the Gmail and Docs features, so if you were already considering more Google storage, the AI plan can be better value than it first looks. Claude Pro is only the AI.

What most households actually end up doing

  • Gemini for anything touching the calendar and the inbox, on whatever Google plan they already have.
  • Claude for the prompts in this library, the writing, and anything they want to think through properly.
  • And that combination costs nothing extra if both are on free tiers, which is where I would start.

Prices and features change constantly. Last checked August 2026.
