What to share with AI, what to blur, and what to never type in

Katie Jones · October 16, 2026

Privacy warnings about AI usually sound terrifying, but they do not need to be. Setting boundaries is not about restricting what you can do. It is about freedom. Once you know exactly what is safe to share, you stop second-guessing every single prompt and just get to work. Here are the only three rules you actually need.

1. Never share what can open up your money or identity

Social Security numbers, full account or card numbers, passwords, PINs, security-question answers, and photos of IDs or passports should never touch an AI chat. This is not because chat logs are uniquely dangerous, but because this class of information should never sit in any digital log, anywhere, period. The habit is the protection.

2. Blur the details that do not change the answer

Here is the liberating part: AI does not need real identifiers to help you. “My daughter, age 7, at a school in a big city” gets you the exact same advice as using her actual name and the school's name. “A local business doing about $2 million in revenue” works just as well as the company's real title.

The advice will be identical, but your private life stays private.

3. Other people's information isn't yours to paste

This is the clearest rule, and the one people break the most. Your friend's private medical text, a client's financial records, or an email someone sent you in confidence does not belong in an AI chat. If you need the AI to help you draft a response to something confidential, completely strip out the names, locations, and unique identifiers first.

4. Spend two minutes on your settings

Most major AI tools have a setting that lets your conversations train future models. Find it once and turn it off:

  • ChatGPT: Go to Settings -> Data Controls -> Toggle off model training.
  • Claude: Go to Settings -> Privacy Settings -> Turn off the toggle for improving AI models.
  • Gemini: Go to your Google account activity controls and turn off Keep Activity (it used to be called Gemini Apps Activity). Two minutes, done forever.

5. Assume the chat could someday be seen

Not because it will be, but because it is the right mental calibration. Think of it like email. Emails get forwarded, breached, and screenshotted all the time, yet we use email constantly because we know not to put our deepest secrets or bank logins in them. Adopt that exact same posture here.

The Freedom of Boundaries

What does this leave you free to do? Honestly, everything that actually matters. Meal plans, hard emails, project plans, career strategy, trip logistics, homework help, and brainstorming. None of those require a single piece of sensitive data.

Privacy isn't the opposite of using new tools. It is the boundary that lets you use them without a second thought.
