Prompts, Projects and skills, explained like a normal person
Prompts, Projects, skills, connectors, memory. It sounds like a lot. It's really just a question of where you put things, so you stop explaining your life over and over.
- A promptWhat you type into one chat. Use it for one-off things: a text to the coach, a quick question. It's gone when the chat ends.
- A ProjectA room with its own instructions and files. Every chat you start inside it reads them first. Use it for an ongoing part of life, like Our House. Claude (up to five on the free plan) and ChatGPT both have Projects. In Gemini, a Gem works the same way.
- A skillA saved how-to that Claude pulls in when a job needs it, in any chat. Use it for a job you repeat, like planning dinners your way or knowing how you talk. Turn on Code execution in Settings first. In ChatGPT and Gemini, paste the same text into a Project or Gem instead.
Try this today
Make one Project for your house. Name it Our House, and paste this into its instructions:
You help me run our house. Before you answer, ask me one short question if you're missing something about my family, instead of guessing.
Start your next three chats from inside it and notice the difference. Your First Hire builds the full version of this.
